"Fake heroes like..Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush.."

The Years of Shame

Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?
Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.
What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. Te atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.
A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits — people who should have understood very well what was happening — took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?
The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.
I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.
Krugman may not allow comments to his post, but I will. Please unload in this chicken-fornicating son-of-a-bitch if you like. To the gentler, more sensitive visitors to this blog, I issue a harsh language alert: read at your own risk.

  1. I will always say a man goes insane when his life's dreams go up in smoke. He advocated every single move that Obama has taken, and it has all been a miserable utter failure, but the worst part is that all his enemies (betters) told him it was all hogwash. this he can no longer live with so he strikes out in maddness.

  2. I do not understand why Afghanistan is not a sea of glass. TWP, thank you for posting this.

  3. Dear friends,

You both make excellent points. I would, however, submit that only parts of Afghanistan should be converted to puddles of Pyrex: the Taliban- and AQ-infested regions.

  4. Note to "Asswipe":

I was happily surprised yesterday by the unashamed Patriotism and 911 remembrances all over TV. As I watched my football games I thought to myself, "The libs couldn't stop this, and damn them for trying!"

    NEVER FORGET!
